Veterinary Nurse Burnout Prevention Survey

Background and survey development
The need for a tool to evaluate the veterinary workplace climate emerged from a series of studies investigating burnout among veterinary nurses and technicians (VNTs). The initial research identified 10 key risk factors unique to the VNT role that contribute to burnout. Building on these findings, an international panel of experts was convened to develop and assess workplace strategies aimed at addressing these risks. This process resulted in 39 strategies, each rated as either ‘effective’ or ‘highly effective’ in preventing burnout. However, consensus on the ease of implementation was not achieved, largely due to variability in clinic environments, including differences in leadership support and openness to change.

No existing tools specifically measured these unique workplace factors contributing to VNT burnout. This highlighted a clear need for a practical resource to help clinics identify burnout risks and select appropriate, evidence-based strategies for prevention.

The Veterinary Nurse Burnout Prevention Survey (VNBPS) was developed to meet this need. Designed for ease of use, the VNBPS enables veterinary clinics to quickly assess the presence of burnout risk factors and potential barriers to implementing preventive strategies. The survey consists of 35 questions and takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It is intended to be completed anonymously by both VNT team members and team leaders, to help identify differences in how aspects of the work environment are perceived. This helps clinics better understand their team’s needs and take action to improve wellbeing.
